I am a beginner and have never practiced martial arts, is this school right for me?
Absolutely! No one is born with martial art skills and we all have to start somewhere. We would be doing a dis-service if we did not cater to all levels of skill set including no experience to well experienced level students. As long as you want to learn, we got something to teach you.
Are my kids too young for martial art training?
Probably not, however at Cooper's New England Martial Arts, children can start at age 4 in Taekwondo. Although we feel that children under 4 is perfectly capable of learning we feel that children at age 4 and above would benefit more. For Kickboxing, age requirement is 14 and for Mixed Martial Arts, we start at age 16.
Never! We believe that there is no age limitation when it comes to martial art training. If you have the will, then you are perfectly capable of practicing martial arts. Martial Art training is an excellent way to stay active, get fit, building strength and increasing flexibility.
No, this is a great way to whip into shape. Everyone has a different threshold in endurance level due to fitness, age, injuries and limitation. As you start out or coming back after a long time off, go at your own pace while at the same time, each time you train, you push yourself a little harder.
Absolutely!! But remember there are no miracle cure for weight loss contrary to the popular belief with all that gimmick and pills that are on the market today. There is no magic to weight loss. Modern technology have turned us to less active people. Remember the old days when men had to hunt for their food? Now you can get a greasy burger down the street just by sitting in your car and driving. You don't even have to get out of your car! Martial Art training will keep you active, and unlike the gym environment where you have to motivate yourself, in a class environment you work without feeling like it just to keep up with the entire class. You also benefit from increase in flexibility from various stretches that are done during and after class. But like anything else, you got to first, show up! That's the first step, then you got to make a commitment, not to our school but to yourself! Weight loss and increase fitness level comes to folks who work hard and are committed to themselves. Martial Art training will have a positive physical results but aside from that you will be learning a valuable self defense techniques that could potentially save your life.
Yes!!! Martial Art training is especially important to girls and women. Self defense techniques is something that all women and girls should be taught and practiced on regular basis. The seminars are great to raise awareness but practicing on regular basis is crucial. If ever these techniques are required to be used in a real life situation, you only get one chance! So practice, practice practice! The physical training is excellent as it will strengthen muscles and bones. Women are invigorated and empowered when they practice martial art because they are doing something
This really depends on who is asking the question but very important thing to remember is that Martial Art school is NOT a gym and should never be compared as one I'm not saying that one is better than the other, just that its not a good comparison. Its like comparing apples to a fruit salad, apple being a gym and martial art school as a fruit salad.
Although in some aspects of fitness training, gyms and martial art training are some what simllar since they both promote fitness and weight loss through repetitive motion, but that's about it.
In Martial Arts, students are training repetitively to develop their body to become a weapon. Martial Art training can be very intense and the sheer impact one faces when sparring or punching and kicking the bag is beyond comparison to repetitive motion with free weights or machines found in gyms. In gym training, you focus on breaking down your muscle tissues to build strength. In martial art training, you focus on breaking down your skin, muscles tissues as well as bones, and joints. Making your body stronger to take impact by constantly striking an object.
At Cooper's New England Martial Arts, students can burn up to 1000 calories in one class and are challenged to improve their physical abilities such as flexibility, agility, speed, strength, concentration and focus. Students are also guided to respect, take responsibility, have self-control, and overcome challenges and never to give up.
Yes, it is all part of training, I'm not going to lie about that. Any respectful martial art school will tell you that although you may have some protection, you will get hurt. Remember, if you need to defend yourself and had no proper training, you will be hurt far worse than if you were to get proper training. The training itself is to breakdown your body so that your body becomes stronger. Your body is resilient and will recover each time only to become stronger. In reality no matter what you do, there is a possibility of getting hurt, in life. Injuries occur.
Bottom line, if you are afraid of getting hurt, this is not for you.

Absolutely! At Cooper's New England Martial Arts, we want you to experience what we have to offer before you make the commitment. We offer two free trials to any of the curriculum you are interested in with no strings attached. We only want students who really like what we have to offer and those who wants to commit themselves.
We leave the answer to be open for each individuals to determine. We never claim to be the best school in the area as one's definition of best martial art school might be totally different from another. However we are confident to say that we provide a high quality lessons keeping our students best interest to be our top priority. We realize that although it is a school we also realize that we are a service provider. We want to watch our students grow and become better each day. Belts are not just given to our students just because its time for belt test, students must earn their belt through attendance and performance and must be selected to participated in Belt Test. We teach discipline, patience and perseverance through practice.

True, but it is dangerous because students are taught to defend themselves when their lives are threatened. It is more dangerous not to have martial art background as one is not open to various techniques including some mental training as well as physical training martial art training has to offer.
No, its quite the opposite. Of course if you join a school where they teach bad values, this may be true. At Cooper's New England Martial Art, students are taught to be responsible and are guided against using these techniques unless their lives are at stake. We guide our students to determine in what types of situation it should be used and when it should not be used. These guidance are very important for any martial art school to teach, its not all about learning kicks, punches and blocks. It is instilling good moral values and making students think responsibly.
This is a huge misconception and most martial art schools are not run in a way demonstrated in Hollywood movies where they have a corrupt master teaching their students to go and beat up any kids for entertainment. I'm not saying that those schools don't exist, but at Cooper's New England Martial Art we do not tolerate this behavior. Students are guided to be a positive role model to the society and never to become a bully. We have "ZERO tolerance" policies when it comes to our student taking on a bully role. We teach our students to be respectful, humble and to avoid fights.
While this maybe true, at Cooper's New England Martial Arts, we continue the traditional training including sparring. We believe that it is not right to be a martial artist and not have sparred. Sparring is a whole different training. While it maybe true that some schools no longer offer sparring classes, we continue sparring classes with full protection so that injuries can be avoided. This is where your mind, and body works together and you learn about timing and when to execute certain techniques. I believe that students learn the most about themselves through sparring.
In many cases sparring teaches students to recognize their limitation as they have delay reaction time, inability to move smoothly or to think quickly at any given situation, lack of stamina, etc... Sparring is the closet thing to a fighting so taking that away from the classes would be doing an injustice to training. I recognize that sparring is more of a sport and in a real life situation, you probably would not be using the sparring techniques to defend yourself, but it allows students to think quickly.
This is so wrong in so many ways. Although one may benefit from getting a great aerobic exercise out of martial art training the main focus here is to increase performance and techniques to become sufficient in defense. The main goal of Aerobics exercise is to get your hear rate up and movements performed on Aerobics are nothing more than that. So huge difference.
Girls should not train martial arts
Girls should absolutely train Martial Arts if this sparks interest. I believe every women should take some form of self defense. Have you seen the news in the last 10 years?
Not true, martial art training allows student to be prepared through repetitive training and allows student to open their mind to possibilities of thinking better ways to personalize and utilize techniques in the most effective way. It allows them to think of different scenarios and think about what the best way is to handle various different scenarios. While I agree that there are no guarantees that these techniques can save life, it is better to be prepared and having practiced, students will have a better chance of survival than someone who had no formal training. Without formal training, if someone tried to defend themselves' they would certainly get more injured doing it as their body is not condition to kick or punch.
This a huge misconception however this depends where they are training. Any reputable Martial Art school will teach respect, discipline, humility and other positive characteristic traits. However, I realize that there are schools out there that does NOT teach the values of what it means to be a true martial artist and only focuses on the physical training and being the best. However, majority of the MMA fighters have various background in traditional martial arts training which generally teaches good moral values. At Cooper's New England Martial art, we apply some of the traditional guidelines to our MMA students and they are expected to show the same respect as traditional martial art student does. |
